ONE of France's oldest and most respected medical bodies went to great lengths to put the country's men at ease about the size of their penis.
The National Academy of Surgery - established by Louis XV in 1731 - was so alarmed by the growing popularity of penis-enlargement surgery that it published the long and the short of penis size to reassure French men about their adequacy.
It offers a comprehensive list of "normal" penis measurements in an effort to discourage them from undertaking the potentially-dangerous procedures, news website The Local reported.
It found that a "normal" French penis measures between 9 and 9.5cm long when flaccid and is 12.8 to 14.5cm from base to tip when erect.
The average circumference is 8.5 to 9cm when flaccid and 10 to 10.5cm when erect.
"The feeling of having an insufficiently-large penis can be a source of anxiety and psychological suffering for a man," the academy said.
It added that enlargement procedures can be risky and put the patient at "risk of certain complications, in particular regarding erections".
